Blackjack Science and Card Counting
Counting numbers may be the simplest thing you can do in a card game but add in the excitement and thrill of losing or doubling your money, facing a skillful dealer as an opponent, and matching wits and skill in addition to well-placed timing, you’d have the most popular casino card counting game of all time – Blackjack.
Basically, the mechanics of the game is to have the highest pair of cards without exceeding twenty-one, sound simple enough, right? At the beginning of the game, players are asked to place their bet and then are given a pair of cards each face-up while the dealer only has one card face-up. A player may stand and stick with the cards given to him or hit and take another card. Hitting is allowed as often a player would like, but if his cards exceed twenty-one, he busts and loses while the dealer automatically wins. The number on the cards represent their value in the game, while jacks, queens and kings have a value of ten. Aces on the other hand have the option of having a value of one or eleven, depending on the player’s decision. Any card with a value of ten paired with an ace is called a blackjack, which trumps any other hand except another blackjack.
One feature of blackjack is the insurance offer where players are given the opportunity to recover their losses in the event that a dealer strikes a blackjack hand. The offer is given when a dealer’s faced-up card is an ace which gives him a winning edge should his face-down card happen to be a ten value card. An insurance decision pays out two to one in the event that the dealer’s face-down card is a ten value card and commits him to a blackjack hand. But the overall probability puts insurance offers as an unnecessary risk, taking into consideration the fact that players observe all the cards in play and tediously compute for the chances of a ten value card coming out as positive in a dealer’s hand.
There are different variations of blackjack games that offer pretty much the same mechanics but with each significant and unique aspect distinguishing one from another. Pontoon, Spanish 21, Vegas Style Blackjack, Double Exposure Blackjack, Double Attack Blackjack, Chinese Blackjack and Multiple Action Blackjack to name a few. These games may be played in their respective place of origin, or online which hosts most (if not all) of online blackjack game variations.
